Are you in the market for affordable health insurance? Have you been shopping around for an affordable plan that meets your needs? The chances are that you have experienced and may be discouraged by all the confusion inherent in the process. The good news is that now there is a resource to help you navigate the options available and make sure you get the right one.

Health insurance brokers registered with DC Health Link, the exchange set up in DC to administer the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA), are available to assist individuals and small business owners in navigating the ACA system. There is no cost to consumers to obtain or use an insurance broker. Here’s how it works:

Who Are Health Insurance Brokers?

Health insurance brokers can represent multiple insurance carriers at the same time. They know the ins and outs of many different policies, and they can pair the customer with the right plan from the right company. Insurance brokers have proven expertise and long-standing relationships in the community. To be eligible to work with DC Health Link, brokers have to meet the following requirements:

  • Have an active DC license in good standing,
  • Complete training on DC Health Link, and
  • Have contractual relationships with each carrier in DC Health Link for the market in which he/she intends to sell.

How Do Health Insurance Brokers Help?

Sometimes the selection of the right broker is just as important as selecting the right health insurance. The broker's ability to help a customer find the best insurance plan depends on how familiar they are with the system – all the policy options available and how they work – and their commitment to the customer's best interest. There is an important difference between insurance agents and insurance brokers. Agents promote plans for specific companies; brokers have access to all the companies on the exchange and look for the best match between policy and customer need.

Your relationship with your broker doesn’t end once you purchase coverage but continues throughout the lifetime of your health insurance coverage.

I am a broker with the exchange service and can navigate the system for you, find your best options, review and discuss them with you. I will then do most of the work to get things set up according to your choices. When it comes time for annual renewal, I will be there to keep that simple too. If you live in Washington, DC and need the services of a certified registered broker with DC Health Link, contact me.
